The idea of the week

Line-of-sight islands, a calm channel between them and a different beach bar every night. The Virgin Islands are the first charter we recommend to most families and to anyone who has never chartered before, and a full week without repeating an anchorage. Fly into St Thomas on a direct US flight, board in Charlotte Amalie, and loop through the British islands and back: St John's national park, the Caves at Norman Island, Cooper Island's rum bar, the Baths and the North Sound on Virgin Gorda, Anegada for the lobster and Jost Van Dyke for the Soggy Dollar.

Every leg is an hour or two except the run from Anegada to Jost, which is three. British and US together: the border is a formality on a yacht and the crew handle it. Legs are approximate, at a steady ten knots, and the captain adjusts them for the weather on the day.

What the crew arrange along the way

The toys, every day

Seabobs, paddleboards, wakeboards, the slide if the yacht has one. In the Caribbean the water is the point, and the crew have them in by the time breakfast is cleared.

Diving and snorkelling

Reefs off almost every anchorage, a dive instructor on most yachts, and gear for everyone. The Tobago Cays, Anegada's Horseshoe Reef and the Indians in the BVI are the ones people talk about afterwards.

A themed day or night on board, at least one

The Caribbean is about the boat, so we plan at least one themed day or night. Tell us the idea before the charter and the crew have the costumes and decorations ready: pirate night is the classic.

Day by day

1

St John

St John, US Virgin Islands · 9 nm · 1 h · Board, then into the national park

Board in Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, and be at anchor off St John within the hour. Two thirds of the island is national park and the north-shore bays, Caneel, Hawksnest, Trunk and Francis, are the calmest first night in the Caribbean. Swim, snorkel the reef off the bow, dinner on board.

  • An hour from boarding to the park
  • Trunk Bay's underwater trail
  • First night in a national park bay
2

Norman Island

Norman Island, British Virgin Islands · 11 nm · 1 h · Clear in, then the Caves and the Indians

Across to Soper's Hole to clear into the BVI, then round to Norman Island, the one Stevenson is said to have had in mind for Treasure Island. Snorkel the Caves at Treasure Point and the Indians, four rock pinnacles with the best fish life in the islands. The Bight for the night, with the Willy T floating bar if the group is that sort of group.

  • The Caves and the Indians
  • The Bight at Norman Island
  • The Willy T, optional
3

Cooper Island

Cooper Island, British Virgin Islands · 8 nm · 45 min · Reef and rum

An easy day. Forty-five minutes to Cooper Island, snorkel Cistern Point with the turtles, lunch on board, and the Cooper Island Beach Club in the afternoon with its rum bar, its microbrewery and its coffee shop. Nothing else to do, which is the point.

  • Turtles at Cistern Point
  • The Cooper Island rum bar
  • A day of nothing
4

Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands · 12 nm · 1 h · The Baths early, the North Sound for the night

Leave at first light so the Baths are yours before the day boats: granite boulders the size of houses, grottoes and pools between them, the trail through to Devil's Bay. Then round to the North Sound, a lagoon ringed by islands, for the afternoon on the toys and the night at Saba Rock or the Bitter End.

  • The Baths before anyone else
  • The North Sound lagoon
  • Saba Rock or the Bitter End for the night
5

Anegada

Anegada, British Virgin Islands · 14 nm · 1.5 h · Lobster on the beach

The only coral island in the Virgins, flat and ringed by reef, an hour and a half north. Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Beach for the day, the flamingos in the salt ponds, and the Anegada lobster grilled on the beach at sunset at one of the shacks on the point. Book the lobster before lunch; they go.

  • Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Beach
  • The flamingos in the salt ponds
  • Anegada lobster on the beach
6

Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands · 30 nm · 3 h · The Soggy Dollar and Foxy's

The longest leg of the week, three hours west across the top of Tortola with the toys out at the lunch stop. White Bay on Jost Van Dyke is the beach bar everyone has heard of: swim ashore to the Soggy Dollar for a Painkiller, which is how it got its name. Foxy's in Great Harbour for the evening.

  • Swim ashore to the Soggy Dollar
  • A Painkiller where it was invented
  • Foxy's for the night
7

St John

St John, US Virgin Islands · 5 nm · 30 min · Back into the US, the last park bay

Half an hour back across the channel to clear into the US, then Maho Bay for the last day: turtles in the seagrass, the calmest water of the week, and the farewell dinner on deck with the park dark around you.

  • Turtles at Maho Bay
  • Farewell dinner at anchor
  • The quietest night of the week
8

St Thomas

St Thomas, US Virgin Islands · 12 nm · 1 h · Disembark

An hour back to Charlotte Amalie after breakfast. The airport is fifteen minutes away, with direct flights across the US.

  • Breakfast on the move
  • Fifteen minutes to the airport
