Fiji Through the Eyes of Captain Peter Rackemann

A MISCHIEF charter story in the Islands of Happiness

There's a certain kind of magic that happens when a superyacht meets the South Pacific. The pace slows, the colours intensify, and every anchorage feels like it was waiting just for you. In our new video interview, Captain Peter Rackemann of M/Y MISCHIEF shares what makes Fiji one of his all-time favourite cruising grounds, not just for its postcard lagoons and reefs, but for the warmth of the people who live among them.

Fiji Islands

The Islands of Happiness

Fiji is often called the "Islands of Happiness", and it's easy to see why. From floating bars and traditional ceremonies to world-class snorkelling and barefoot beach feasts, the destination balances luxury with laid-back island life in a way few places can. And aboard MISCHIEF, a 54-metre Baglietto sleeping 12 guests across six ensuite cabins, that balance becomes a charter experience you feel in your bones.

"Fiji is one of my favourite places to charter. The people, the islands, the feeling of it, it's special."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

"Every day here can be completely different, and all of them are unforgettable."

Captain's pick: Taveuni and the wild side of Fiji

Ask Captain Peter where he loves taking guests when they want something a little more adventurous, and he doesn't hesitate. Taveuni Island.

Remote, lush, and fringed by reefs, Taveuni is home to Rainbow Reef and dramatic waterfalls that spill straight into the sea. It's the kind of off-the-beaten-path Fiji that feels discovered rather than visited, and a reminder that the islands still hold plenty of secrets for those willing to roam.

For divers and snorkellers, Rainbow Reef is the headline act. Soft corals in surreal colour, shelves alive with reef fish, and visibility that seems to go on forever. For everyone else, it's simply a jaw-dropping place to swim.

"Taveuni is incredible. It feels wild, remote, and totally untouched."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

"Rainbow Reef is one of those places that makes people fall in love with the ocean all over again."

An "ultimate day" in Fiji , MISCHIEF style

Captain Peter's ideal Fiji day is equal parts ocean adventure and island indulgence. Here's how he maps it out.

Mid-morning: Swim with manta rays at Manta Ray Passage

There are few experiences more humbling than drifting beside these gentle giants in water so clear you feel like you're floating in air.

Lunch on the move: A long, lazy cruise with a beautiful lunch

MISCHIEF slips between islands while you enjoy. Fiji's island groups are close to one another, so the scenery keeps changing without ever feeling rushed.

Afternoon: A reef swim in waters known for reef sharks

Thrilling, safe, and unforgettable. It's the kind of moment that turns even the most casual snorkeller into a storyteller for life.

Sunset: A beach picnic with fire twirling, a bonfire, and the day toasted under a tropical sky

Fiji doesn't do quiet sunsets. It does celebrations.

"Swimming with mantas in Fiji is hard to beat. It's one of those bucket-list moments."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

"Finish it all with a beach picnic and a bonfire, that's Fiji at its best."

The people who make Fiji , Fiji

For Captain Peter, the destination's true superpower isn't just the scenery. It's the spirit.

From the moment guests land in Nadi, they're greeted with a huge, joyful "Bula!" and a welcome that feels immediate and genuine. That warmth continues on the water. Local line handlers, village hosts, school children, and ceremony leaders all weave into a charter in a way that makes Fiji feel like more than a cruising ground. It feels like a shared experience.

One of Captain Peter's most special memories was taking guests ashore at Waya Island to visit the local district school. They brought kava for a traditional sevusevu welcome, joining the community as children sang for hours. A simple, deeply moving exchange that guests never forget.

"The Fijians are the heart of the place. The welcome is real, every time."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

"The school visit on Waya Island was one of those days guests talk about for years."

Why MISCHIEF is made for Fiji

Fiji is a captain's playground, and MISCHIEF is the perfect yacht to explore it.

Peter says the biggest surprise of cruising Fiji is the outer reef that wraps the entire island chain. That reef acts like a natural breakwater, giving MISCHIEF protection from ocean swell and allowing more flexible itineraries, even when conditions elsewhere might force a change of plan.

It also means exploration is practically limitless. With MISCHIEF's capability and Peter's local knowledge, the yacht can slip through narrow reef passages, access tucked-away anchorages, and chase the perfect day without being boxed in by the weather.

Navigation here is a craft in itself. Cruising at night is generally avoided because reef markings can differ from charts, so Peter uses a mix of drone scouting and tenders running ahead to guide MISCHIEF safely into the best spots. That extra care equals extra reward, the kind of Fiji you only see from a yacht.

"The outer reef changes everything here. It protects you and opens up the cruising grounds."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

"Fiji rewards careful navigation. When you do it right, you get anchorages nobody else sees."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

Castaway Island, Cloudbreak and family-favourite Fiji

While Fiji's remote corners are a dream, some icons deserve their fame.

Castaway Island, Monuriki, is Peter's most well-known stop. The unmistakable "Tom Hanks island" from Cast Away. Guests can hike the steep track to the summit in about 90 minutes for a view across the island chain, then cool off in crystal shallows at the beach below.

If Peter's own family were visiting, he'd begin the day at Cloudbreak for surfing, cruise past Cloud 9 for lunch on the famous floating bar, and finish with another manta-ray swim. These are the kinds of highlights travellers love in Fiji. Floating cocktails, reef adventures, and easy island hops in the Mamanucas and Yasawas.

"Castaway Island is always a favourite. People love the hike and the view."

— Captain Peter Rackemann

"Cloudbreak, Cloud 9, mantas. That's a pretty perfect family day in Fiji."
