The idea of the week

If you know the Whitsundays, this is somewhere few charter guests ever go. Board at Hamilton Island and point south: New Year's Eve at anchor in the remote Percy Isles, then Great Keppel, the coral cay of Lady Musgrave in turtle season, and K'gari, the largest sand island on earth. Home again by a different set of islands, the Town of 1770, the outer Keppels and a last night in the Percys.

It is a New Year with no crowds and no city lights, two World Heritage areas, and around 765 nautical miles of coast most people only ever see from a plane. Distances are approximate and every anchorage is chosen on the day by the captain for wind, swell and tide. The long passages run faster than the short hops, so you spend more of each day at anchor.

Woven into the week

What the crew arrange along the way

The parts of the week that need a phone call before you arrive: tables, guides, instructors and the toys on deck.

New Year's Eve dinner at anchor

A long dinner on deck in the Percy Isles, with the menu designed with your chef before the charter. No crowds and no city glow, just stars and the countdown.

  • Menu planned with the chef ahead of time
  • Dinner on deck at West Bay, Middle Percy
  • The countdown under a dark sky
A private K'gari 4WD day

A licensed local guide takes you across the island: Lake McKenzie's freshwater lagoon, the rainforest at Central Station, Eli Creek and the Maheno shipwreck on 75 Mile Beach.

  • Licensed local guide
  • Lake McKenzie and Central Station
  • Eli Creek and the Maheno wreck
The toys, every day

Jetskis, seabobs, paddleboards, wakeboards and the slide if the yacht has one, in the water by the time breakfast is cleared. In the Whitsundays and on the Reef the snorkelling gear matters more; in the Kimberley the tenders do the work.

Turtle season at Lady Musgrave

Early January is peak nesting season, when green and loggerhead turtles come ashore at night and the first hatchlings can appear. The crew give a turtle-watching briefing before you go ashore.

  • Green and loggerhead turtles nesting at night
  • The first hatchlings of the season
  • A briefing on how to watch without disturbing them
A day's fishing

Marlin off Port Stephens in summer and off Cairns in spring, mackerel and coral trout on the Reef, barramundi in the Kimberley rivers. We arrange a dedicated fishing tender with its own crew for a half or full day, and the galley cooks the catch.

  • Black marlin off Cairns, September to December
  • Coral trout and mackerel on the Reef
  • Barramundi in the Kimberley creeks, from the tender
A themed night on board, at least one

A long passage day or a quiet anchorage is the night for it. Tell us the idea before the charter and the crew have the costumes and the decorations ready. Australia Day on the Harbour needs no theme at all.

  • Decided with the crew before the charter
  • Costumes and decorations on board
  • Best on a passage day or a quiet anchorage

Make it two weeks

One more week, one more coast

A week is one country. Two weeks reaches the neighbour across the water, and the crossing is part of the trip. Each of these joins onto this week; choose one and we send both weeks, day by day, as one plan.

Back to Whitsundays

The other weeks we have planned on this coast, and when to go.
