The idea of the week

The Whitsundays are where the fleet winters; this is where the Reef is at its best. Fly into Cairns, board, and spend a week working north along the outer reef: the Low Isles and Port Douglas, the Agincourt system, then the Ribbon Reefs with their walls and Cod Hole, where potato cod the size of a person meet the divers. It ends at Lizard Island, one island with one resort and an airstrip, which means you fly home from the anchorage.

It is a week for the water: diving and snorkelling every day, the best visibility of the year, and almost no other boats once you are past Port Douglas. Superyacht charters start on any day of the week, so the route stands on its own. Legs are approximate, at a steady ten knots, and the captain adjusts them for the weather and the swell on the day.

What the week costs

The yacht's published weekly rate, plus an Advance Provisioning Allowance, customarily 30 percent, for fuel, food, drink and berths, plus local VAT where it applies. Every listing shows its rate.

Woven into the week

What the crew arrange along the way

The parts of the week that need a phone call before you arrive: tables, guides, instructors and the toys on deck.

Diving the outer reef

The yacht carries the gear and, where she has one, the instructor. Bait Reef and Hardy Reef from the Whitsundays; the Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole and the Agincourt system from Port Douglas and Lizard Island, the best diving in the country.

  • Cod Hole: potato cod the size of a person
  • The Ribbon Reefs' walls and the Steve's Bommie pinnacle
  • Beginners' courses on calm reef days
The beach picnic

The crew land a table, chairs, umbrellas and a kitchen on a beach with nobody on it and cook lunch there, with the yacht in view. Store Beach in the Harbour, The Basin in Pittwater, Whitehaven at low tide: Australia has more of these beaches than anywhere we go.

The toys, every day

Jetskis, seabobs, paddleboards, wakeboards and the slide if the yacht has one, in the water by the time breakfast is cleared. In the Whitsundays and on the Reef the snorkelling gear matters more; in the Kimberley the tenders do the work.

A day's fishing

Marlin off Port Stephens in summer and off Cairns in spring, mackerel and coral trout on the Reef, barramundi in the Kimberley rivers. We arrange a dedicated fishing tender with its own crew for a half or full day, and the galley cooks the catch.

  • Black marlin off Cairns, September to December
  • Coral trout and mackerel on the Reef
  • Barramundi in the Kimberley creeks, from the tender
A helicopter day

In the Whitsundays it lands you on the Heart Reef pontoon or Whitehaven before anyone else. In the Kimberley it is the only way to Mitchell Falls, and the gorges from the air are the photograph of the trip. The yacht's own helipad if she has one, or a charter from shore.

  • Heart Reef and the outer reef from the air
  • Mitchell Falls, with a swim in the top pool
  • Horizontal Falls at full flood, from above and then from the tender
A themed night on board, at least one

A long passage day or a quiet anchorage is the night for it. Tell us the idea before the charter and the crew have the costumes and the decorations ready. Australia Day on the Harbour needs no theme at all.

  • Decided with the crew before the charter
  • Costumes and decorations on board
  • Best on a passage day or a quiet anchorage

Make it two weeks

One more week, one more coast

A week is one country. Two weeks reaches the neighbour across the water, and the crossing is part of the trip. Each of these joins onto this week; choose one and we send both weeks, day by day, as one plan.
