The idea of the week

Greener, wilder and better sailing than the Leewards, and far less spoken about. Fly into St Lucia, board under the Pitons, and run south through the Grenadines one way to Grenada: Bequia for the harbour, Mustique for the names, the Tobago Cays for the water, Mayreau and Petit St Vincent for the beaches, and the Spice Island to finish. One longer leg on the second day, then everything is an hour or two.

This is the week for people who have done the Leewards or the Med and want the rustic Caribbean: tiny islands, beach shacks, locals you get to know, and anchorages where yours is the only boat. Legs are approximate, at a steady ten knots, and the captain adjusts them for the weather on the day.

What the crew arrange along the way

Diving and snorkelling

Reefs off almost every anchorage, a dive instructor on most yachts, and gear for everyone. The Tobago Cays, Anegada's Horseshoe Reef and the Indians in the BVI are the ones people talk about afterwards.

The beach picnic

The crew land a table, chairs, umbrellas and a kitchen on a beach with nobody else on it and cook lunch there. Anguilla is the best place in the Caribbean for one; the crew will find the others.

The toys, every day

Seabobs, paddleboards, wakeboards, the slide if the yacht has one. In the Caribbean the water is the point, and the crew have them in by the time breakfast is cleared.

Day by day

1

St Lucia

St Lucia, Windward Islands · 16 nm · 1.5 h · Board, then the Pitons by sunset

Board at Rodney Bay or Marigot Bay, both an hour from the international airport in the south, and run down the west coast to Soufrière, where the two Pitons rise straight out of the sea. Anchor beneath them for the first night. Dinner on board, with the biggest view of the week.

  • The Pitons from the water
  • Sulphur springs and the drive-in volcano
  • First night under Petit Piton
2

Bequia

Bequia, the Grenadines · 56 nm · 5.5 h · The one long leg

Five and a half hours south past St Vincent, a sea day with breakfast under way and lunch on the move. Admiralty Bay at Bequia is the friendliest harbour in the chain: boat builders, a waterfront path, Jack's on Princess Margaret Beach for the evening, and a town that still turns out for the ferry.

  • A sea day past St Vincent's volcano
  • Admiralty Bay and Port Elizabeth
  • Sundowners at Jack's Beach Bar
3

Mustique

Mustique, the Grenadines · 9 nm · 1 h · Macaroni Beach and Basil's

An hour to the private island. Britannia Bay for the anchorage, a mule to Macaroni Beach for the morning, lunch at the Cotton House or the Beach Café, and Basil's Bar on the water for the evening. Wednesday is jump-up night, if it falls right.

  • Macaroni Beach by island mule
  • Lunch at the Cotton House
  • Basil's Bar at sunset
4

Tobago Cays

Tobago Cays, the Grenadines · 19 nm · 2 h · Lunch at Canouan, then the best water in the Windwards

South past Canouan, with lunch in its lagoon if the group wants the resort for an hour, then into the Tobago Cays: five uninhabited islands behind a horseshoe reef, turtles grazing under the boat, and the clearest water of the trip. Snorkel until the light goes. The crew arrange a lobster barbecue on Petit Bateau with the local boatmen.

  • Swim with the turtles at Baradal
  • Horseshoe Reef snorkelling
  • Lobster barbecue on the beach
5

Mayreau

Mayreau, the Grenadines · 3 nm · 20 min · A second day in the Cays, then Saltwhistle Bay

A second morning in the Cays for anyone who wants it, then twenty minutes round to Saltwhistle Bay on Mayreau, a perfect curve of sand with palms on a spit between two seas. Walk up to the village and the stone church for the view over the whole Grenadines.

  • Saltwhistle Bay
  • The walk to Mayreau's hilltop church
  • A beach day with the toys
6

Petit St Vincent or Carriacou

Petit St Vincent and Carriacou, the Grenadines · 8 to 12 nm · 1 h · The resort, or the quiet

An hour south. Petit St Vincent for the private-island resort, its beach bar and a massage in the trees, or Carriacou for the quiet: Sandy Island, a sandbar with a few palms and a reef, and Paradise Beach for a rum punch at the Off the Hook bar. Clear into Grenada here.

  • Petit St Vincent's beach bar
  • Sandy Island off Carriacou
  • Clear into Grenada
7

Grenada

Grenada, Windward Islands · 35 to 39 nm · 4 h · Grand Anse, then the Carenage

Four hours down the leeward side of Grenada with the island's green hills to port. Lunch at anchor off Grand Anse, two miles of beach, then into St George's, the prettiest harbour town in the Caribbean, with the Carenage curving round it. Farewell dinner ashore, nutmeg in everything.

  • Grand Anse beach
  • St George's and the Carenage
  • Farewell dinner on the Spice Island
8

St George's

Grenada, Windward Islands · Alongside · Disembark
