Bimini

Alice Town, North Bimini · 49 nm · 5 h · The crossing, then conch salad at sunset

Day 1, Bimini

Board in Miami or Fort Lauderdale in the morning and cross the Gulf Stream over lunch, with the lines out behind for the first mahi-mahi. Clear in at Alice Town, then conch salad made in front of you at Joe's or Stuart's shack, sunset at Sherry's on the west beach with rum and reggae, and a last drink at the Big Game Club bar where Hemingway drank.

  • Five hours across the Stream, lines out
  • Conch salad at Joe's
  • Sunset at Sherry's, a drink at the Big Game Club

Gun Cay and Honeymoon Harbour

Gun Cay, south of Bimini · 10 nm · 1 h · Stingrays and the Sapona wreck

Day 2, Gun Cay and Honeymoon Harbour

An hour south along the islands, with a stop to snorkel the SS Sapona, a concrete ship wrecked in a 1926 hurricane and sitting in fifteen feet of water, full of fish. Then Honeymoon Harbour on Gun Cay, where the stingrays swim up to the beach and nose round your knees. A day on the banks with the toys, the float-off, and the night in the cove.

  • Snorkel the Sapona
  • Stingrays at Honeymoon Harbour
  • The float-off on the banks

Bimini

Alice Town, North Bimini · 10 nm · 1 h · A day's fishing, then the End of the World

Day 3, Bimini

The fishing day. A professional fishing tender and its crew run alongside for the morning off the drop-off: marlin, tuna and wahoo in season, and the galley cooks whatever comes back. Non-fishers have the west beach and the Resorts World pool. The last night at the End of the World Saloon, sand on the floor and no explanation for the ceiling.

  • Sport fishing off the Gulf Stream drop-off
  • The catch for dinner
  • The End of the World Saloon

Home

Miami or Fort Lauderdale · 49 nm · 5 h · Back across the Stream

Day 4, Home

The captain picks the morning. Five hours back across the Gulf Stream with breakfast under way, alongside in Florida by early afternoon.

  • Breakfast on the move
  • Alongside in Florida by early afternoon

The idea of the week

The weekend Florida does. Bimini is fifty miles east of Miami on the edge of the Gulf Stream, close enough to see from a tall building on a clear day, and the crossing takes five hours. Hemingway fished here in the thirties; the marlin and tuna still run past the end of the dock, a concrete ship lies wrecked in fifteen feet of water, and stingrays swim up to your knees on the beach at Gun Cay.

Board on Friday morning, cross after lunch, clear in at Alice Town, and spend the weekend on the banks. The captain picks the crossing days: a north wind against the Stream makes it rough, so we move when it is calm. Superyacht charters start on any day of the week, so the route stands on its own. Legs are approximate, at a steady ten knots, and the captain adjusts them for the weather and the tide on the day. The banks are shallow, so the yacht moves in daylight and takes her time.

How charter pricing works

Also on this coast

Everything we know about Bahamas: when to go, where the fleet is and the other weeks we have planned.

Open Bahamas

Woven into the week

What the crew arrange along the way

The parts of the week that need a phone call before you arrive: tables, guides, instructors and the toys on deck.

The float-off day

The float-off day

Ellie's ritual. Every toy that floats goes in the water: the pool detached from the boat, the mats, the loungers. The esky goes in with them, and everyone drifts off together for the afternoon with drinks and snacks and nothing to do. Any yacht with floating mats can do it; the ones with a sea pool do it best.

The toys, every day

Jet skis for the creeks and the sandbars, seabobs, paddleboards, wakeboards, the slide if the yacht has one. In the Exumas the water is the whole point, and the crew have the toys in by the time breakfast is cleared.

The beach picnic, on a sandbar or in your own bay

The beach picnic, on a sandbar or in your own bay

The crew land a table, chairs, umbrellas and a kitchen and cook lunch there, with the yacht in view. Ellie's favourite is the little bay at Pipe Cay, but the Exumas have more picnic beaches than we could list, and a sandbar that only exists at low tide is the Bahamas version.

A day's sport fishing

For keen fishers. We arrange a professional fishing tender with its own fishermen to run alongside the yacht for a half or full day: wahoo, mahi-mahi and tuna off the drop-off into Exuma Sound, bonefish on the flats, marlin off Bimini and Chub Cay in season. Ellie's family do it on every Bahamas trip.

  • Half or full day, from the anchorage
  • The Exuma Sound drop-off is minutes away
  • Bonefishing on the flats for the patient
  • The galley cooks the catch that night

On to Nassau and the Exumas

With a week instead of a weekend, carry on east from Bimini across the Great Bahama Bank to the Berry Islands and Nassau, and run the Exumas from there. The crossing from Florida replaces the flight.

  • Bimini to Chub Cay in the Berrys, a day
  • Chub Cay to Nassau, four hours
  • Then the Exumas week
