Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) explained

On most yacht charters, you'll be asked to provide an Advanced Provisioning Allowance so your professional crew can prepare every detail before you step on board. Here's how it works, what it covers, and why it keeps your experience effortless.

What is APA?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance is a lump sum that covers all on-board expenses beyond your base charter fee. While the charter contract includes the yacht, crew, and insurance, the APA ensures items such as provisioning, dockage, and fuel can be organised in advance and managed seamlessly throughout your itinerary.

What does your APA cover?

The allowance is designed to keep every aspect of your trip personalised. It covers day-to-day expenses as well as any special requests you make while cruising.

  • Food and alcohol – request favourite menus, vintages, or specialty cuisines
  • Fuel for the yacht, tenders, and water toys while you cruise
  • Dockage and harbour fees at marinas throughout your itinerary
  • On-board communications such as satellite or internet usage

How is your APA calculated?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance is calculated as a percentage of your charter fee, most commonly between 30% and 50%. This pool of funds gives your crew the flexibility to prepare every detail before you arrive and respond quickly to requests while you are on board.

When do you pay your APA?

The allowance is usually transferred several weeks before embarkation, alongside your final charter instalment. Your charter broker forwards the funds directly to the yacht so the captain can provision, fuel, and schedule everything ahead of your arrival.

During your charter

Your captain oversees day-to-day spending, ensuring every purchase aligns with your preferences. You can request updates at any time and you will see a clear breakdown of how the allowance is being used throughout the voyage.

Settling your account

Before disembarkation, you receive a full APA statement and supporting receipts. Any additional spend is settled by the charterer, while unused funds are promptly returned to you.
