Captain Charlie Kinder on LUMIR, the Whitsundays, and Becoming a Superyacht Captain at 22
If there is one thing Captain Charlie Kinder wants people to understand about captaining a superyacht, it is that the magic is not just in the manoeuvres. It is in the leadership, the calm decision-making, the responsibility, and the way you look after people. “My name’s Charlie,” she says with an easy confidence. “I’m the captain on Motor Yacht LUMIR.” At just 22 years old, Charlie stepped into the role of captain and joined a small group of women leading superyachts globally. Her journey is grounded in hard work, resilience, and a genuine love of life on the water.
A Yacht That Surprises Even the Most Seasoned Guests
LUMIR is a yacht designed for both adrenaline and elegance. When asked what tends to surprise guests the most, Charlie immediately points to a feature that feels uniquely LUMIR. “I think the back poker table inside the main salon is a pretty cool addition,” she says. “Kind of just like lift the table off and they’re always very surprised to see underneath.” Beyond its hidden details, LUMIR balances performance and comfort effortlessly, offering guests a charter experience that feels both exciting and refined.

The Guest Journey, From Hamilton Island to Sunset Cocktails
For Charlie, the charter experience is about flow. From arrival to the final farewell, she wants guests to feel taken care of without needing to think about the logistics behind the scenes. “Up in the Whitsundays, they can fly into Hamilton Island,” she says. “So we pick them up from the island, and then we do a beautiful cruise up the Whitsundays passage to a nice anchorage protected overnight.” And then come the moments that define the experience. “With the sunset, canapés before dinner, cocktails on the flybridge, them enjoying the spa.” LUMIR is available for charter throughout the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as in Sydney Harbour during the summer season. “LUMIR can be chartered up in the Whitsundays around the islands and on the Great Barrier Reef,” Charlie says. “We’re also available for charter over the summer season in Sydney Harbour.”

Toys, Adventure, and a Floating Playground
Adventure plays a big role in life onboard LUMIR, and Charlie loves seeing guests make the most of it. “We have our 47-foot chase boat as well as two jet skis,” she says. “We have a Seabob, three different flight boards, lots of inflatables, a big pool, lily pad, and lots of spearfishing gear and dive gear on board.” Whether guests are chasing adrenaline or enjoying relaxed days on the water, LUMIR is set up to deliver unforgettable moments.

The 2026 Calendar, Sydney, Whitsundays, and Reef Magic
Charlie’s 2026 season will take LUMIR through some of Australia’s most iconic cruising grounds. “We will be in Sydney Harbour over the New Year’s period, heading up to the Whitsundays probably towards April, May,” she says. “Then Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef, cruising until October.” When asked what she is most excited about, her answer comes without hesitation. “I absolutely love the Whitsundays. I love the Great Barrier Reef. It’s such a unique part of the world, and it always feels very magical up there.”

From “Fell Into the Industry” to Captain of LUMIR
Charlie never set out with a plan to become a superyacht captain. Her journey into yachting happened organically. “I never saw myself working on superyachts or in the yacht industry,” she says. “I kind of just fell into the industry a little bit.” What followed was years of experience, dedication, and determination. “I love being on the water and I love the job and I just work really hard,” she says. “All the stars kind of aligned and I was very lucky.” She has now been working on superyachts for around five to six years and has been the captain onboard LUMIR for the past four.
“It’s Not Rocket Science”, Challenging Misconceptions
For Charlie, the role of captain is about capability and mindset rather than perception. “It’s not rocket science,” she says. “But you do have to prioritise safety and you do have to be a strong individual to do the job. But, yeah, anybody can do it.” Being a young female captain has not been without its challenges. “I think the biggest challenge was just being a female in an industry where it’s a rarity to have a female captain,” she says. “Pushing through those initial hurdles was hard, but it’s become a lot easier now.”
The Most Breathtaking Anchorage So Far
Among all the places she has cruised, one location stands out. “On the inside of Fraser Island, you have the massive sand dunes there and the contrast between the blue water and then the sand dunes,” Charlie says. “And you’ve got dingoes running along the beach. It was phenomenal.”

Crew Life, the Part Guests Rarely See
Life at sea can be demanding, and Charlie is open about the realities of crew life. “It can be difficult being away from home and being away from your family and friends for such a long period of time,” she says. “But your crew become your own family, so you always have each other.”
Her Favourite Part of the Job, Building Future Leaders
What Charlie enjoys most about being a captain is helping others grow. “I really, really enjoy teaching the junior crew and giving them a chance to learn and get their hands on the sticks and get a feel for manoeuvring the boat,” she says. Supporting and mentoring the next generation of crew is one of the most rewarding parts of life onboard LUMIR.

The One Rule Every Guest Should Remember
If Charlie could put one rule on a giant neon sign for guests, it would be a practical one. “I feel like spray on sunscreen is a massive one. We hate that so much,” she laughs. “And then, obviously, just no shoes on the deck.” The reason is simple. “It’s really, really oil based, and people always spray it on their feet,” she says. “And then you’ve just got two massive footprints on your deck that’s so hard to get out.”
Sunrise Over Sunset
Despite the pace of charter life, Charlie treasures the quiet moments. “I prefer sunrise,” she says. “Nobody’s awake at that time, so it’s just you, your coffee and the sunrise. It’s pretty magical.”

Advice for Aspiring Crew
For anyone hoping to enter the yachting industry, Charlie’s advice is clear. “Be prepared to work very hard, ask questions, no questions are dumb questions,” she says. “And have a good attitude.”
