With origins dating back to the 16th century, Marmaris castle lies on a peaceful peninsula between a beach and a marina. After it suffered significant damage from French warships during World War I, the castle was restored significantly through a mammoth decade-long renovation effort in the 1980s. The building now contains an archaeology museum which displays artifacts including pottery, coins and glassware from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras. A definite highlight, the museum also boasts an exhibit detailing what daily life was like for citizens during the Ottoman period.
